This pulls every guide on this site into one place: a simple weekend plan, an interactive packing checklist, and a starter budget calculator so you're not piecing it together from a dozen tabs.

The plan

Before you leave: Check that you actually have a

vehicle capable of the route

you've picked (maintained dirt/gravel roads are fine for a stock AWD/4WD SUV). Pick a destination within 2–3 hours of home for your first trip — closer means less can go wrong, and a short drive back if it does. Download your offline maps before rolling out:

see our offline navigation guide

.

Day 1: Drive out, air down your tires once you leave pavement (18–20 PSI smooths out washboards), set up camp, cook dinner.

Day 2: Explore, cook breakfast/lunch, air back up with a 12V compressor before hitting the highway home.

That's it. The whole point of a first trip is finding out what you actually use, not executing an ambitious itinerary.

Not included above because they're either optional for a first trip or vehicle-dependent: all-terrain tires (often the single biggest line item, see our

all-terrain tire guide

), dedicated solar panels, and complex drawer builds.

Don't buy everything on this list before your first trip.

before you spend on any of it new. The whole philosophy of this site is that your first trip should teach you what you need — not an Instagram build video.
